Iditarod 2014

Congratulations to Dallas Seavey, this year's Iditarod winner! He smashed a previous record and ended up being #1 after a a nail-biting finish. Totally exciting!

Dallas Seavey and his team as they mushed past us.
The teams start in downtown Anchorage for the ceremonial start and come all through town to finally end up at the Campbell Creek Science Center. Then they pack up and head straight for Willow, which is the official start of the Iditarod the following day.

We watched the mushers at our favored spot: on the trails near the Science Center. It's just a few miles from our house so we took advantage of the beautiful day to pop Boyd in the Chariot and stroll over. Thank goodness D reminded me to put the grippers on my snow boots - it was super icy and we definitely needed the extra traction.

Where else can you get this close to world-famous Iditarod racers? The orange cones and lines in the snow denoted a safe crossing space for pedestrians, bikers and skiiers. We perched ourselves right next to the trail and waved/cheered for every team that went by.

Boyd started out watching from the warmth of the Chariot, then wanted to get out and explore. He waved and smiled - and we even were thrown a few dog booties by the mushers. They give them out as a type of favor on the trail.
