Oh take me Home(r)

Get ready, Homer, we're coming! I won't be posting again until Monday, but will hopefully be able to include some great sunny photos of our trip. D pulled out the superwarm down sleeping bags for the tent. Although the day temps are predicted to be in the high 50's -- which is, well, pretty awesome -- the low will be hover at about 37 degrees. Hello, chilly! And we don't hit our high temperatures until late afternoon or so.

And I'm crossing my fingers for some nice halibut...and praying that work doesn't call me in for a swine flu case.

Sunny day photos

Sunshiney day

It is freaking gorgeous here today! Yesterday was amazing as well -- I saw all sorts of people out walking, biking and running. Alaskan summers are too short and we cannot get enough of the sun when it appears.

And the weather people say temps should hit 60 DEGREES! Heaven, pure heaven.

No time to post photos right now, but will do so later. Hope this weather holds up for the weekend!

Thanks a lot piggy

Hoo boy, this swine flu is keeping us busy. Quite a few media calls and requests for interviews. So far, no confirmed cases in Alaska but the World Health Organization (WHO) raised the threat level to 5 (out of 6). Yikes - that is officially a pandemic! If you are sick, stay home -- and don't come anywhere near me please.

Some helpful tips:

• Wash your hands often with soap and water. Use hand sanitizer when soap and water are not available.

• Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze. Cough or sneeze into a tissue or inside your elbow. Then wash your hands or use hand sanitizer.

• Stay home if you are sick. If you have flu symptoms such as fever, body aches and cough, stay home from work or school and avoid public activities for at least five days (seven for children) to prevent spreading the disease to others.

I'm staying put

It blows my mind that a round trip ticket between Anchorage and Seattle on Alaska Air is being advertised as a "deal" at $437 round trip. Lately I've seen Anchorage to San Francisco round-trip for $456 -- that flight is a couple hours longer than the one to Seattle. The airline is totally screwing us over! I remember when I snagged a ticket on that route (ANC-SEA) for $250 a few years ago. Ah, the good old days.

Heart Run

The Heart Run went well -- it didn't rain on Saturday and although I forgot my spring hat and gloves, the weather was fairly warm so I was okay without. A 5K roughly translates to about 3.1 miles, but our little team took it pretty leisurely -- 1 hour, 48 minutes! More of a meander than a run, really.

A slight hill as the course enters the second mile -- I remember this gradual climb as a killer (back in the day when I actually ran the race!)

Our team -- we walked in honor of our friend's mom (at right, in black), who experienced a heart attack ON A PLANE. They made an emergency landing in Utah after her seatmate recognized the signs and alerted a flight attendant. Heart disease is serious, people -- she is still doing cardiac rehab two years after the event.

The course featured all sorts of entertainment along the way. Here are the belly dancers:

And band, complete with tuba! In this photo it's obvious that spring has yet to fully arrive -- the trees all still lack leaves and our grass is quite yellow.

The finish - whohoo! A slight glimpse of the Chugach Mountains at right.
